Technology

The various components of the GEON system are shown in the following diagram. You may click on each module to obtain more information about it.

Central Servers

Portal Server, runs the Gridsphere portal software, along with all server-side code for the various portlets.

A Dell server-class machine with 750 GB raw disk (5 x 146 GB hot-swappable SAS drives), dual core 2.0 GHz Intel Xeon processors, 8 GB of RAM, dual gigabit network interfaces, and redundant power supplies.

Data Server, runs databases and filesystems for hosting the GEON Catalog and other GEON data services, and also provides access to an SRB Server for storing data collections.

A Dell server-class machine with dual core 2.0 GHz Intel Xeon processors and 4GB of RAM. Includes 5 x 300 GB RAID SAS drives for a total of 1.5 Terabytes of raw drive space.

GEON Certificate Authority (CA) Server, manages user grid accounts for the portal.

Same basic configuration as the Portal Server, but with 2 GB RAM and reduced disk size (about 36GB)

GIS Server, provides all GIS services.

A Dell server-class machine with 750 GB raw disk (5 x 146 GB hot-swappable SAS drives), dual core 2.0 GHz Intel Xeon processors and 8 GB of RAM.

The GEON “Central Server”, serves ROCKS-based software packages (“Rolls”), which can be downloaded and installed at other GEON sites.

A Dell server with dual 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon processors, 30 GB disk and 1 GB RAM.

LiDAR Processing Cluster, for LiDAR workflow processing.

A 3-node cluster for LiDAR workflow processing.
The head node is a Dell server-class machine with 750 GB raw disk (5 x 146 GB hot-swappable SCSI drives), dual 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon processors and 2 GB of RAM.
The two compute servers are also Dell server-class machines with 36 GB disk, dual 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon processors and 2 GB RAM.

SYNSEIS Cluster for execution of SYNSEIS jobs.

An 8-node cluster for the SYNSEIS application.
The head node is a HP server-class machine with 70GB disk, Intel Itanium2 processors and 4GB RAM.
The 7 compute nodes are also HP servers with 30GB disk, Intel Itanium2 processors and 8 GB RAM.

Beta development infrastructure: Beta data server, portal server and GIS server.

The beta servers are similar in hardware architecture to the production servers.

Development Server, for software development.

The development server is similar in hardware to the production portal server.

Windows server, for running Windows-specific application software.
