GEON Network in India
The GEON Cyberinfrastructure Workshop was held at the University of Hyderabad, India, on Aug 3-8, 2007. About 40 attendees were selected for the workshop, including students in the Masters programs in Computer Science, Computer Applications, and Mineral Exploration from the University of Hyderabad; in Geoinformatics from the recently established Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajamundhry; and Geology students from Osmania University, Hyderabad. Participants also included faculty and research staff from these institutions as well as from the University of Pune.
In addition to GEON instructors, invited speakers included Dr. Radhakrishna, Director, National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA); Dr. Rambabu, Deputy Director, NRSA; Dr. D.M. Dimri, Director, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI); Dr. Sushil Nayak, Director, Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS); and Dr. Ravichandran (INCOIS).
An important outcome of the meeting was the decision to establish an i-GEON network in India, with PoP nodes at the University of Pune and the Adikavi Nannaya University in Rajamundhry, which will be linked to the portal at the University of Hyderabad. The University of Pune provides expertise and data in hydrogeology and geophysics. The Nannaya University represents a new university (established in 2006) in a rural region of the country, which offers one of the few Master’s programs in Geoinformatics in India, with an emphasis on remote sensing technologies and data.
The i-GEON collaboration is supported by a grant from the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (www.indousstf.org).
