GEON at GSA Fall Meeting
Plan to visit the GEON team at the GSA Fall meeting. Once again, we’ll be hosting a booth (#756) in the Exhibit Hall, where we’ll be highlighting the project’s most recent developments and tools. Team members will be giving demos and available to discuss resources available via GEON, including the OpenTopography Portal and the Open Earth Framework. Stop by to see the latest OpenTopography features and data sets, including visualization of LiDAR data in Google Earth and recently released data for faults in southern California (Elsinore, Owens Valley, and Burro Flat San Andreas) and the Intermountain Seismic Belt, including Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. Also being highlighted at the booth will be the Open Earth Framework, a data discovery, integration, and visualization system currently under development.
In addition to the project’s booth activities, Christopher Crosby will present “Enhancing Access To High-Resolution LIDAR Topography – From Point Clouds To Google Earth” (Crosby, Christopher J. , Nandigam, Viswanath, Arrowsmith, Ramon , and Baru, Chaitan) on Monday, October 19th at 2:15 p.m. in Room B117/118/119 of the Oregon Convention Center.
Remotely-Sensed Earth-Data Visualization Tool and Technology Summit, October 27, 2009
GEON team members will attend the Remotely-Sensed Earth-Data Visualization Tool and Technology Summit to be held October 27th in Santa Barbara. This Summit is being organized by the New Media Research Institute and will bring together data visualization tool makers to talk about the state of the science in remote sensing visualization tool development.
Data Management Workshop, October 29-30, 2009
A Data Management Workshop, organized by CRC Transregio 32 (Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Systems: monitoring, modeling and data assimilation) and CRC 806 (Our Way to Europe: Culture-Environment Interaction and Human Mobility in the Late Quaternary), will be held October 29-30, 2009 at the University of Cologne - Institute of Geography. Chaitan Baru (GEON PI, SDSC) is an invited speaker and will give a talk on GEON. The submission deadline for papers at this workshop is October 15th, and registration is open through October 19th. Cloud Computing and Collaborative Technologies in the Geosciences Workshop, September 17-18th
A Cloud Computing and Collaborative Technologies in the Geosciences workshop will be held September 17-18th at Indiana University in Indianapolis. Chaitan Baru and Sriram Krishnan will represent the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California San Diego at this meeting, and Dr. Baru will lead a panel on “Challenges of adopting cloud technologies”.
SCEC Annual Meeting, September 12-16th
The 2009 SCEC Annual Meeting will be held September 12-16 in Palm Springs, California at the Hilton Palm Springs resort. This year the meeting will focus on developing the long-term research agenda for the SCEC collaboration, in preparation for the next Center proposal (due early in 2010).
GEON’s CI Contributions to Earthscope
EarthScope and GEON:
The GEON project collaborates with EarthScope on a number of cyberinfrastructure projects, including development of the EarthScope Data Portal for distribution of EarthScope data, and use of the OpenTopography Portal for dissemination of GeoEarthScope LiDAR data. GEON is also developing the OpenEarth Framework (OEF) for integration of 3D and 4D earth science data. An alpha version of OEF has been used to visualize preliminary EarthScope data sets (see below).
GEON at AGU
GEON will have a strong presence at the upcoming AGU Fall meeting, December 15-19 at the Moscone Convention Center West. Please plan to come by our booth (#2342 in the Exhibit Hall) to talk to team members, learn about the project’s developments, and see demonstrations of the latest tools and data available via the GEON portal.
Introducing the OpenTopography Portal
Yesterday, GEON released an updated and redesigned website (http://www.geongrid.org/). As part of the update to the GEON site, we have moved all of the LiDAR topography oriented features previously hosted in the GEON portal to a new website we are calling the OpenTopography Portal (http://opentopography.org/). The OpenTopography site provides the same core LiDAR data access and processing capabilities that were available through GEON, with streamlined access, new features, better opportunities for user discussion, and most importantly, a dedicated online space for users to find high resolution LiDAR topography and related resources.
“Networking the Indian Geoscience Community through iGEON” Workshop to be held at Univ of Hyderabad
GEON team members will travel to India in January to host a CI Workshop and Short Course at the University of Hyderabad, jointly with that institution’s Center for Modeling, Simulation and Design (CMSD), and the University Centre for Earth and Space Sciences (UCESS). This workshop will highlight features of GEON and discuss its architecture from a programmer/user perspective, followed by hands-on experience.
INTEROP – GIN (the Geosciences Information Network)
A coalition of the state geological surveys (AASG), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), GEON, and other partners will receive about $625,000 over 3 years from NSF under the INTEROP solicitation to start building a distributed, interoperable data network. AASG and USGS estimate they collectively maintain over 3,000 data bases or data sets. The GIN project will develop standardized services to make these data accessible online in a distributed network using a few standards and protocols, and work with data providers to implement these services.
