Geology Resources in GEON

image
GEON is harnessing cyberinfrastructure resources to develop tools that allow users to access, process, integrate and visualize geologic data.  The GEONsearch feature allows users to locate data based on keywords, geographic location and temporal range.  Users who have data and tools that would be of interest to the community may register their resources in the GEON catalog so that they can be discovered and utilized by other GEON users.

In addition to the resources available via GEONsearch, GEON also has developed applications that provide access to specific collections of data and associated tools:

  • Paleointegration Project (PIP) - An internet-based system that provides extensive fossil and sedimentary rock databases that are searchable seamlessly from the GEON portal. This greatly facilitates studies of faunal and floral diversity, biogeography and climate through geologic time.

  • Morphobank - A web application providing an online database and workspace for evolutionary research, specifically systematics (the science of determining the evolutionary relationships among species)

  • Data Collections - various collections of geoscience data that have been compiled by GEON and its collaborators:

    • - Wenchuan Earthquake - A collection of photographs taken in Chengdu, Sichuan and other nearby earthquake effected areas.
      - Geologic Map Data - Highlights GEON access to geologic maps and other fundamental geologic datasets in a number of common file formats that may be useful.
      - SWGEONET - an integrated data system focusing on the Transition Zone between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range Province, located primarily in Arizona and New Mexico.  The region is of fundamental significance if we are to understand the geologic evolution of Southwestern North America.
