WHEN & WHERE
The week-long EarthCube Summer Institute for Technology Exploration was held August 12-16, 2013, at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on the campus of University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The program was scheduled full days Monday – Thursday, 8:30AM to 5:00PM, Friday wrapping up at noon. Breaks and meals were provided throughout.
Participants were asked to arrive at 8:00AM Monday to check in and receive name tags. We asked that they arrange their schedule to arrive on time and attend the entire program each day.
Participants of ECSITE’13 were expected to bring a laptop computer with a wireless card to allow them to follow along with demos and hands-on instruction throughout the course.
Attendees were responsible for their own travel arrangements and expense to attend the ECSITE. Additional local information and transportation can be found at the UCSD visitor page. Directions and parking information to SDSC is at the SDSC visitor info page.
On-campus apartment housing was provided for funded ECSITE attendees and was also made available to those participating without funding.
At no expense to the selected funded participant they could check in Sunday, August 11 through check-out Friday, August 16. Attendees choosing ECSITE provided lodging were asked to share an apartment with (1-4) attendees. Participants had their own private room with shared bathroom, kitchen and living space. Roommates were assigned according to gender and by request.

Attendees preferring to stay elsewhere could do so at their personal expense. A list of nearby hotels can be found at the SDSC visitor info page.
Monday Evening Poster Session and Reception:
On Monday evening we held a poster session and reception for all attendees. We included this event as an opportunity for participants to meet their colleagues, learn about the other expertise in the group and offer the potential for collaborative opportunities in the future. Participant posters represented current research, teaching, or project activities. They were showcased during a reception Monday afternoon and remained up throughout the week for viewing during breaks and other downtime. The poster boards display area was 44” tall x 68” wide. The poster boards were unassigned for anyone to post their poster prior to the reception. Blue painters tape was available for posting.
Thursday Evening Dinner:
Participants joined the group for a local dinner on Thursday evening following the program.
