The week-long Cyberinfrastructure Summer Institute for Geoscientists (CSIG) will be held August 8-12, 2011, at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on the campus of University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The program is scheduled full days Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m., Friday wrapping up at noon. Breaks and meals will be provided throughout. The program schedule for this year’s CSIG’11 will be updated as details are finalized.
Participants are asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. on Monday to check in and receive nametags. In addition to the general program please plan to participate in the poster session Monday afternoon. Additional details provided below. Also, a group dinner is scheduled for Thursday evening offering sweeping views of the San Diego coastline. Don’t miss one spectacular sunset!
We do ask that you arrange your schedule to arrive on time and attend the entire program each day along with the Thursday evening dinner.
Participants of CSIG 2011 are expected to bring a laptop computer with a wireless card to allow you to follow along with demos and hands-on instruction throughout this course.
We request that all participants bring a poster that represents your current research, teaching, or project activities. If you are working on geoscience cyberinfrastructure currently, please highlight those activities on your poster. They will be showcased during a reception Monday afternoon. In addition to the attendees, GEON hosts, instructors, and other UCSD/SDSC cyberinfrastructure projects will be invited to attend. The poster boards display area is 44” tall x 68” wide. The poster boards are unassigned so feel free to grab one and post your poster prior to the reception at 4:00 p.m. Blue painters tape will be available for posting.
Attendees are responsible for their own travel arrangements and expense to attend the CSIG. Additional local information and transportation can be found at the UCSD visitor page and the SDSC visitor info page.
On-campus apartment housing will be provided for funded CSIG’11 attendees and can also be made available to those participating without funding.
At no expense to the selected funded participant they may check in Sunday, August 7 through check-out Friday, August 12. Attendees choosing CSIG-provided lodging will be asked to share an apartment with (1-4) attendees. Participants will have their own private room with shared bathroom, kitchen and living space. Roommates will be assigned according to gender and by request.
Check in/out for on-campus apartment housing is at Eleanor Roosevelt College (ERC) Student Activities Center. See “CSIG’11 Hot Spots” map above. Check in is from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7. Check out is from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12. It is recommend that you print this map out and bring it with you, as there will be limited assistance on campus when you arrive on Sunday. The 24 hour desk number for ERC housing is 858-534-1142.
If you are interested in extending your stay on either end of the institute, campus housing has confirmed they have space available. The daily rate is $72.38 for housing (no meals). The extended stay is at your personal expense and will be collected in the ERC office when checking in. Check in/out times remains 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. To extend your housing note the dates of your stay in your response on the invitation returned to .
If parking is required when checking in, the ERC office can issue you an “S” parking permit as part of the housing package. The “S” permits are only valid in “S” marked YELLOW spaces.
Attendees preferring to stay elsewhere may do so at their personal expense. A list of nearby hotels can be found at the SDSC visitor info page.
