GEON

GEON PIs and collaborators have initated a number of courses in the area of geoinformatics. The following is a listing of such course-related activities:

Remote Sensing and Quaternary Environments, Winter 2006, Ramon Arrowsmith, Department of Geological Sciences, Arizona State University; Co-taught with colleagues from Geography and Archeology, this class covers the basics of geoinformatics with emphasis on remote sensing, GIS, and DEM analysis using open source software such as GRASS GIS with applications toward assessing anthropogenic impacts on the environment. This course is utilizes numerous GEON resources.

Geoinformatics Graduate Seminar, Spring 2005, Randy Keller, Dept. of Geosciences, UT El Paso; 8 graduate students enrolled.

Selected Topics in Scientific Data Mangement, Winter 2005, Bertram Ludaescher, Computer Science, UC Davis; Dealing with Cyberinfrastructure related topics such as Data Integration, Knowledge Representation and Scientific Workflows (Kepler). Algorithms of the Inverse Problems in Geosciences, Fall 2005, Vladik Kreinovich, Computer Science, UT El Paso; 9 graduate and 14 senior unergraduate students from Computer Science and Geosciences attended this geoinformatics-related special topics course.

Uncertainty and Knowledge Representation in Geoinformatics, Spring 2004, Vladik Kreinovich, Computer Science, UT El Paso; 13 graduate students in CS attended this course.

Geoinformatics Graduate Seminar, Fall 2003, Randy Keller, Dept. of Geosciences, UT El Paso; 22 graduate students in geology and computer science attended this course.

2-semester required Software Engineering course, Ann Gates, Computer Science, UT El Paso; There are about 30 students/course. A total of over 100 students have taken these courses so far. 2-semester required Software Engineering course, focusing on a GEON-inspired topics.

Also, Randy Keller (UTEP), Krishna Sinha (VaTech), Allister Rees (Arizona), Mike Wright (DLESE), Ramon Arrowsmith (ASU), Vladik Kreinovich (UTEP) are all working with Computer Science and Geosciences students and/or faculty to advance their GEON efforts.
