Partner Projects: OptIPuter

Project: OptIPuter (Distributed Cyberinfrastructure to Support Data-Intensive Scientific Research and Collaboration)

Research Goals: The OptIPuter, so named for its use of Optical networking, Internet Protocol, computer storage, processing and visualization technologies, is an envisioned infrastructure that will tightly couple computational resources over parallel optical networks using the IP communication mechanism. The OptIPuter exploits a new world in which the central architectural element is optical networking, not computers - creating "supernetworks". The collaboration with GEON is to specifically work with NASA Goddard to provide a 4Gbps (gigabits/second) optic network link from Goddard to UCSD to enable fast transfer of data from the NASA GEON node to the GEON portal at SDSC.
GEON co-PI Phil Papadopoulos is also a co-PI of OptIPuter.
