International collaborations are a natural extension of GEON, given the nature of the science. The goals of the "International GEON", or iGEON, activities of the GEON project are to collaborate with international partners in research and education. By deploying GEON nodes at their locations, international partners can participate in GEON and also contribute data and tools to GEON. Via the GEON Cyberinfrastructure workshops, students, faculty, and research professionals can be introduced to the latest developments in cyberinfrastructure for the Geosciences. International partners are selected based on their interest and ability to contribute to the overall mission of geoinformatics and also based on their ability to contribute specific resources, e.g. data and/or tools, to the GEON network.
Currently, joint activities are underway with Canada, China, Japan, and India.
The first iGEON Cyberinfrastructure workshop was held in India in October, 2005 (http://geongrid.org/workshops/ciw_uofhyd/).
A similar workshop is being held in Beijing in July, 2006 (http://geongrid.org/workshops/beijing2006/), in conjunction with the meeting of the AGU Western Pacific Chapter (http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp06/).
Other such workshops are in the planning stages in the Czech Republic and Russia.
